October 3, 2019 – The Federal Highway Administration had to give Texas an additional $208.4 million in FY 2020 to meet the 95 percent “donor state” tax payment guarantee, which was then deducted from the other 49 states plus D.C.

September 2, 2019 – In January 1959, President Eisenhower asked Congress to increase the federal gasoline tax by 50 percent in order to prevent the Highway Trust Fund from running out of money later that year. Congress and the states did not receive the request well.

March 22, 2019 – Senate Budget Committee chairman Mike Enzi today introduced a 2020 budget plan that assumes that Congress will enact somewhere around $85-90 billion in new highway user taxes over five years to keep the Highway Trust Fund solvent at baseline funding levels.

February 25, 2019 – 100 years ago today, the first tax on gasoline as a motor fuel in U.S. history was enacted by the state of Oregon, as a way to pay for an ambitious road construction and maintenance program.

February 22, 2019 – As we prepare to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the enactment of the first motor fuels tax by Oregon in February 1919, here is a look at unsuccessful attempts to tax gasoline in Congress from 1914 through 1918.
