Senate Panel Reschedules Vote on NHTSA Nominee

The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee has schedule a June 27 vote on approving the nomination of Heidi King to run the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Her nomination had been scheduled for a vote on May 22 but was pulled at the last minute because Democratic opposition to the nomination was solidifying and because  not all Republicans might have ben able to attend due to a schedule conflict.

The panel’s agenda (listed here) also includes a few other transportation-related items:

  • S. 1092, Interstate Transport Act of 2017 – relates to the carriage of knives across state lines.
  • S. 1896, TSA LEAP Pay Reform Act of 2017 – clarifies the application of availability pay for Federal Air Marshals and TSA investigators.
  • S. 3094, Transportation Worker Identification Credential Act of 2018 – suspends applicability of the TWIC rule until after the study that Congress required in section 1(b) of Public Law 114-278 is completed.
  • H.R. 4254, Women in Aerospace Education Act – promotes Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program and NASA internship and fellowship opportunities to women- passed the House December 19, 2017.
  • H.R. 4467, Strengthening Aviation Security Act – orders the Federal Air Marshal Service to use a risk-based strategy when allocating resources to flights, including when setting its annual target number of flights to cover – passed the House March 22, 2018.
  • H.R. 4559, Global Aviation System Security Reform Act – directs TSA to conduct a global aviation security review to address improving aviation security standards, including standards intended to mitigate cybersecurity threats, across the global aviation system – passed the House January 9, 2018.
